Our history
AIM was formed 70 years ago by a group of young Melbourne foremen who met in 1938 and decided to begin an association where they could maintain contact and develop their knowledge of management principles and practices.
Formally beginning in 1941 as the Foremanship Association and then the Institute of Industrial Management of Australia, AIM received its official name change in 1949.
It was a strong conviction of John Storey and the other industrialists who founded the Institute that Australia’s economic prosperity depended on improving the productivity of the manufacturing industry, and also in raising the performance of management. The primary role of the Institute was to educate its members through conferences, lectures, discussions and through networking.
Gradually over the decades AIM offices in Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Wollongong and Sydney were joined by divisions in Brisbane, Hobart and Perth, ACT and Darwin. These State divisions were established in order to maintain relationships with the local community of managers and leaders and to input to the establishment of a national AIM structure.
In 2001 the Tasmanian and Victorian branches merged and we became officially known as The Australian Institute of Management, Victoria & Tasmania.
In 2010 AIM VT acquired Australia’s leading provider of simulation learning solutions, Abbott Training Systems, and its subsidiary company, SimSkill. The business was launched as Idria in March 2011 and now provides clients, in Australia and internationally, with the design, development and delivery of immersive learning solutions including simulations. Idria adds an important dimension to the learning opportunities provided by AIM VT with its advanced simulation technology giving participants the opportunity to fast track learning, anywhere and anytime. |
